The future of our world depends on the use of genetically modified foods to help with imminent problems such as, over population, malnutrition, drought, and overuse of pesticides. A genetically modified food is a food that has had its DNA altered to change or create a desired trait in the food. Genetically modified foods can create so many good things that there is absolutely no reason they should not be allowed in our agricultural world. Many people make claims such as, “GMO’s are unsafe and cause cancer!” Or, “GMO’s aren’t needed.” Both of these and other claims are untrue and not backed up by scientific information. Genetically modified foods are good for our world. One of the imminent problems our world faces today is the over use of pesticides. Genetically modified crops can help with this problem. Genetically modified foods can help with these issues. Overpopulation is already a problem and will only get worse. By 2050, it is estimated that the population will be 9.6 billion people. We are going to need 70% more food to feed everyone (Reville par. 2). Several genetically modified foods can help with this. One is drought resistant crops so that less crops are lost in times of immense heat. There is also a crop called “golden rice” that gives the eater vitamin A to support their diet (Montagu par. 4). Several similar crops can create more nutritious meals easier. These types of crops are critical to developing countries, either by giving the population access to nutritious food and larger income so they can focus on things like education. If America decides to ban genetically modified foods, it is probable that developing countries will do the same (Reville par. 5).
