An overdose epidemic now killing some 30,000 Americans a year – President Barack Obama declared.(Dickinson) People and organizations have been arguing for the right to legalize recreational marijuana. There are several problems with this. This is going to open the door to many future problems like new addicts due to the availability of marijuana. People believe that marijuana is harmless it just makes the user feel good, but this is not true it does make you feel better while also destroying your ability to make good conscious decisions. Marijuana works by making your brain release more THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which affects memory, pleasure, movements, thinking, concentration, coordination, and sensory and time perception. The DEA has stated that medical marijuana has no medical value; it just inhibits, but does not cure any illness. (Hotakainen) The counter argument states that marijuana is just a relaxant, but people do not realize the trouble they cause. Those people do not realize the effects of marijuana, and how it changes a person’s life and consumes them. They do not realize that marijuana is highly addictive, and can make people be reliant on it, and most of all its effects. Marijuana is a gateway drug to the use of other drugs. Marijuana legalization has its positives and negatives. It could help some people with certain illnesses while can be easily misused for non medicinal uses. People could easily take advantage of their prescription and easily start selling their medicinal marijuana. What is to stop people from selling their medical marijuana to people who are fine and do not require it? This could be a major problem if marijuana was legal. If marijuana was available to the people what is to stop them from doing dangerous things such as working with heavy machinery, and possibly hurting themselves severely or others?
