The Professional Development session was a combination of skills and insights relevant to a culture of learning both in line with the right drivers and in tension with them. There were ideas that accentuate the right drivers such as capacity building and pedagogy/instruction and those that go against the drivers – individualistic solutions.

What we learned today relates to capacity building because it is stressing that an effort be made to improve all of the teachers in their teaching capabilities through coaching on instructional practices and classroom behavior and management. By helping teachers build their skills, they will become more accountable. Through this process, it is possible to create a staff of leaders with high performance expectations and contribute to a healthy culture.

It has the right driver of pedagogy/instruction behind it because that is the point of the coaching/observing program in the first place. It covers core instructional practices broken down into four standards: Objective Driven Instruction, Expectations and Accountability, Student Motivation and Rigorous Engagement. This is an idea that has never come to mind for me and I had not previously seen on any example teacher walk-through or observation forms. The idea of calculating this and then pinpointing the reasons for the lack of focus from the students and offering the teacher ways they might improve is an interesting one. After talking through possible remedies and then setting and tracking goals for improvement, it is certainly in line with the driver of improving
