Animal Cruelty or Life-Saving Science

Imagine this, you or a loved one has caught a deadly disease with no treatment or cure. Testing on animals has become illegal, and no one has consented to be a test subject to help find a treatment or cure for this life-ending disease. What options do you have to choose from? Some people deem animal testing to be inhumane and cruel, while others believe that testing on animals, is simply part of science. We have come a long way in the development of science, and that is mostly due to being able to test on animals. Testing on animals allows for us to find treatments or cures that can ultimately prolong human life. Testing is done on animals because they are thought to be the closest match and best one with regards to applying this data to humans (Murnaghan). This means that whatever we find through research or experiments done on animals, directly correlates to us as humans. We share 95 percent of our genes with a mouse, making them an effective model for the human body (Understanding Animal Research). It’s hard to believe that such a tiny creature is so genetically similar to humans, with the fact that our sizes are remarkably different. There are many people who don’t like animals and don’t care what happens to them, but here is also a great majority of people who are highly against animal testing. An article from Peta states, “They linguish in pain, suffer from extreme frustration, ache with loneliness, and long to be free.” The truth of the matter is that animals themselves actually benefit from the result of animal testing. If vaccines were not tested on animals, millions of animals would have died from things like rabies or distemper.
