As a healthcare provider, I believe before answering this question I should let my patient know exactly what a genetic test is, what it entails and how it is done. With that being said I would let her know that a genetic n test is a test that takes an in depth look in changes that occur within our genes, chromosomes and proteins. There are many different types of genetic tests that are available for consumers to try. Each with different ways on how it is done, each with its own purpose and different rules regarding eligibility. Some genetic test could be based off of “molecular approaches, simple family history questionnaires or even a biochemical test”(“How is genetic testing done?”). These tests can be done in various ways by getting blood samples, hair samples, amniotic fluid samples and even by a piece of tissue sample. The pros and cons, I will be mentioning varies on the type of genetic tests done. The main pro with choosing to get a genetic test done is the insight and the knowledge that is gained based of the result. Knowing the details of your family history is key especially for the future and also with your present family. You are able to inform your family of what you have found and encourage them to do the same. If the results aren’t what you expected, you and your doctor will be able to manage the disease properly or maybe even prevent from getting to a point to where it harms you and have disastrous results. Along with just getting information, a great thing that comes with the results of genetic testing is a peace of mind, that uncertainty is reduced about certain diseases and you can go on with living your
