The prohibition of cannabis has been around for a long time the United States. The reasons for why cannabis is illegal could be very shocking to you. Marijuana was first made illegal in 1906 due to the Pure Food and Drug Act. Along with many other drugs, marijuana had been used for medical purposes up its initial criminalization in 1906. However, the times are changing and the outdates and the unnecessary laws are becoming more unnecessary. The populous of the Unites States understands that marijuana has medical benefits and they are determined to make a change.

Another startling fact is "Another study from 2012 found that a marijuana-related arrest is made every 42 seconds in the U.S." (Bradford). Putting people in jail is not cheap and by eliminating cannabis related arrests we could save a lot of money and time. Every time a police officer has to deal with cannabis it is wasting his or her time and prevents them from doing their job which is to protect and serve. More arrests result in over-crowding in prisons. It does not do any good to arrest someone who possess, sells, or grows cannabis. Addiction is a big problem in the U.S. Medical marijuana can offer another alternative to addictive medicine that is also expensive. Natural medicine is safe, and it is not highly addictive. Other benefits of legalization include reduction in incarcerations for committing a "crime". The main opposers of marijuana are companies who want to remain rich and steal from the people. I think that that is very corrupt and selfish. The companies are aware of the possible rival in their market.
