College sports are among the most highly anticipated programs on national television. Especially since the turn of the century, the popularity has skyrocketed to new heights. With new exciting players that are bound for greatness, college sports are a perfect place for future stars, whether it’s in the NBA or NFL, to blossom and hone their skills. However, with this new generation of athletes come with new controversies. Maybe the most important and pressing one is “should collegiate athletes be paid?” Every since the emergence of college athletics in 1869 for football and basketball in 1896, college athletics has been making the coaches and administration extraneous amounts of money. This is an important stat in this topic because many athletes do not think they can get a good job outside of their sport. Many athletes that come from low income families believe that sports is the only way to make their family proud and make them rich, so adding three more years, in the case of football, and one more year, in the case of basketball, of school and without pay just adds more time to a family struggling and an athlete who thinks they are letting down their family. So paying these athletes will be very helpful for their families because it can provide some relief until they can hopefully make it to the pros. Also paying these athletes, especially those who come from low income families, can help the athlete, if they choose to save up the money then when the graduate and they unfortunately don’t make it to the pros, they aren't left dead broke they have some money to go out into the world with. These unfortunate circumstances most always leave the athlete to never play their favorite sport again. Another atrocity by the NCAA and universities alike is that once the athlete is under review for their scholarship, the school no longer allows the person to access their transcript. This is a terrible action taken by these institutions because this denies any opportunity for the athlete to transfer to another school in the hope that they offer them a scholarship and pay for their medical expenses. However, there maybe a solution to this abuse of power. If the NCAA decides to finally pay athletes then the athletes can save up money so that if the dreadful day where they get hurt does come, they aren't left in massive debt and also without a
