My primary interest in the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) is that it is a prime opportunity to be face-to-face with the development process of new methods of treatment for difficult to treat illnesses. Researchers rework and streamline ineffective rehabilitation methods, which will lead to an easier treatment process for patients. For someone such as myself that is aspiring to become a medical doctor, it would be of great benefit to me to see what new methods of treatments are being made and how they may one day be applied. Each of the research labs being offered are multidisciplinary, combining fields such as physiology, neurobiology and mechanical engineering together to develop new treatment methods. As a result, an environment is made where each lab can witness each other’s research and apply any new techniques discovered to their own. …show more content…
Seeing how they go about the process of managing their labs will teach me what is expected of me if I wish to enter research myself. Specifically, I can learn about lab decorum, how to present research findings and how to work in a group of my peers. I can also apply what I have learned here into another, similar setting such as in a hospital. Any projects I have worked on along with professional researchers can, with their blessing, be elaborated on by myself and others who have worked alongside them as student research. Working with professionals has the great benefit of being able to network with others in similar fields which in turn will expose me to other potential research opportunities. The presentation aspect at the end of the research period provides me the opportunity to display what new findings I have uncovered to other professionals. Consequently, it is a must if I wish to contact potential employers or even schools that could have me as a
