Throughout high school I challenged myself academically by taking six rigorous advanced placement courses and two honors courses. I studied relentlessly and achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.93. I made the decision to take the advanced placement classes to better prepare myself for the course load and subject matter I would encounter in college. My first term at Oregon State University I took 16 credits that filled some prerequisite requirements for my major as well as “bacc core” credits. After the fall term I realized I could handle more classes and decided to pursue 19 credit hours in the winter term. One event in particular, Anacortes School’s Foundation’s, Celebrate the Season, had a significant impact on myself and the community. Through this event, I helped paint sets and decorations, built displays, ran games for children, and helped promote, and run the dinner auction. This event alone has raised over one hundred thousand dollars in just the five years it has been in place. The money raised has gone to fund STEM related classes, guest speakers, field trips and national competitions such as the KidWind Project. Growing up, my favorite classes were always math and science. I had the opportunity to go to the Seattle Science Museum in elementary school and was fascinated with all the possibilities and technologies. By volunteering at this event, I was able to help provide similar opportunities to other students. The money we raised also went towards STEM camp, a summer camp for middle school kids that introduced different topics of interest and careers. I volunteered as a camp councilor for two years where I assisted in planning different class options, working as an assistant to instructors, and organizing activities for the students to engage in during the lunch breaks. My senior year, as a fundraiser for the high school girls swim team, my co-captain and I worked as instructors for the recreation workshop.
