Rough Draft of Advertisement Analysis
This ad appeals to the basic human desire to want to lose weight. The marketing technique in this ad is simplistic, in that it only uses a picture of two different sized doors and a well-known weight loss program’s logo. The lure is strong, implying that by making a choice to choose the large door, the result will be a new, skinnier you that comes out the other side through this journey.
By using soft colors, such as white and light green, it would seem to signify simplicity, clean and less stressful than ads that use bright, flashy colors. The “softness” of the ad, would seem an attempt to target a female audience, as it lacks the marketing ploys that might attract men, such as sports, outdoor settings, and female models holding a product. Women tend to want to be “skinnier” and put more importance on being smaller and wanting the shape they had when they were younger than I believe men do. The ad stirs several emotions. The large door represents sadness, hopelessness and unhappiness, and the smaller door represents hope, happiness and self-satisfaction. I also see it causing uncertainty, in that once you leave through the skinny door, is there a possibility that you could return to the way you used to be, before you started? The product being sold appears simple, and that is weight loss, physical change that can be seen in the mirror as well as by others who see you. The only way you know there are other products being sold is that you either already know that food and nutritional counseling come with the commitment to Weight Watchers or you simply assume that just walking through a door doesn’t change you, but that you have to change you by taking that first
