Self-Identified Leadership Style: Transformational
Our risk management work team at Hyatt Corporation identified our gifts with a Strength Finder Gallup assessment which measures natural unique talents (Gallup, Inc., 2017). One of my top five strengths is connectedness (Gallup, Inc., 2017). My natural ability to unify and build teams to communicate and help each other is a characteristic of transformational leadership (Evans, 2015). People that have a connectedness characteristic can also promote team success using kind behaviors such as consideration, care, and understanding (Gallup, Inc., 2017). A company that values workplace safety positively affect employees’ behaviors and attitudes, decreases injury rates and workers’ compensation costs, and inspires excellence in productivity (Cooper, 2015). Safety and quality coexist in a business; for example, employees that are committed to safety values and goals are also committed to the organization’s success in service excellence (Cooper, 2015). I am not sure if I could, or want to, change my transformational leadership style because of my natural ability to connect and care for people (Gallup, Inc., 2016). Additionally, an occupational health nurse’s core standards simulate transformation because our ethical standards are to provide services to work communities with a concerned priority and duty to provide health and wellness for all people, while respecting human dignity and advocating for organizations to be responsible for their employees’ safety (Rogers, 2012). Transformational qualities such as knowledge, skills, and abilities allow me to guide the organization toward valuing safety over production, and people’s health over money (Cooper, 2015). Additionally, I am able to motivate managers and employees to care about each other; for example, a managers or employee see a safety risk that could cause injuries, and immediately corrects the problem so someone will not get hurt (Cooper, 2015). I support twelve full service hotels and 40 small hotels across 20 states. During my mid-year review, the hotels teams reported that I was passionate and enthusiastic in promoting safety and health; and kind and caring when delivering the message to the managers and employees.
