In this paper, a discussion will occur on personal leadership. This will be accomplished by first building out a personal leadership philosophy. Then a review of an interview of a squadron commander’s biggest leadership challenge will be presented. Finally, an analysis of the leadership challenge will be evaluated in context with the author’s leadership philosophy. In accomplishing these elements, this paper will provide a learning opportunity and insight into leadership and its challenges and opportunities. Specifically, as I pursued my Master’s Degree in organizational leadership, sustainability in business and the principle of the triple bottom line spoke to me. Triple bottom line decision-making is the process by which social, environmental, and financial considerations are weighed in decision-making.1 The importance of the triple bottom line in business has been attributed to a growing emphasis on environmental and social bottom lines to reduce cultural risk.2 As it has to business, I feel the triple bottom line talks what is needed for successful leadership of a military organization. Social impacts can be likened to how we develop people and build cultures of accountability and trust. Environmental impacts can be likened to how we have ownership of where we work and build relationships within our communities and with partners. Servant Leadership makes use of everyone within an organization when making decisions and based on caring and ethical view to build a culture of caring and organizational improvement.3 I feel this augments the sustainability approach while providing a leadership
