Society today has several thoughts on the issue of marijuana being legalized. There are two types of people, people who believe that it’s a drug that only gets you high and others believe it has many medical advantages. There are many advantages when it comes to the use of marijuana, one being, how dispensaries make incredible amount of profit in a year, but there are also many downfalls as well that include how marijuana could be gateway drug and the physical effects it has on the human body. Marijuana causes long term effects including brain damage, cancer, and mental illness. That being said, marijuana kills brain cells and for those who are not fully developed yet, could cause brain damage.“Marijuana use by teens has been associated with schizophrenia, paranoia and other psychosis leading to depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts” (CALM). “One in six people who start using it marijuana as adolescents become addicted” (CALM). Tetrahydrocannabinol which is THC is the chemical in marijuana that gets the user high. “The potency of the most active chemical, delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol, is 10-20 times stronger than 30 years ago” (CALM). The potency has changed dramatically within a short period of time and is continuing to get stronger and stronger.
