There’s various types of tests that are developed for all categories of academic learning and mainly used to gauge a students’ learning comprehension and progress. Teachers can use the results to evaluate student understanding of the material, is the material being used conducive to comprehension, and is the teacher appropriately presenting the material that meets student needs for understanding. Now with that said, I’m going to get on my soapbox for a small paragraph. I believe standardized test is a sham in itself. Why? After all that we have learned from research and our own text books that each student learns in different ways, at different rates, and to treat them as individuals. Just this past Monday we’ve all seen the difficulty students have in reading and comprehending for the reason that most text are slightly or far above the reading level for that grade. So again, how can standardize tests be administered if a student(s) struggle, throughout the school year, comprehending difficult text? Standardized testing supposedly proves accountability. Is it accountability or the fear of losing state and/or federal funding because the standardized test results didn’t meet guidelines set forth by the state and federal educational departments? Educational testing should be centered around individual student achievements and performance throughout the school at their individual learning level, not based primarily on if the school gets funding for next fiscal school year.
