(JACKIE)In every state, there are specific standards that must be met by each school district that reassures the state that each student is progressing further in their education. Standardized testing is the way the state has set up a method to check students abilities and to make sure they are ready to advance to the next grade. However, because of these tests, teachers are limited on what they can teach and often times must strictly go by the state standards of teaching. Standardized testing should be removed from state curriculum because it causes teachers to go by the books, which makes them less likely to feel passionate about what they are teaching since the state came up with what they must make the students learn. In the article “Teacher Voice: In Defense of Standardized Testing” by James Aycock, he states, “if I teach something, but my class still hasn’t mastered it, then as a teacher I need to examine how I taught it the first time in order to teach it better next time”. Likewise, if my class already knows something, I don’t need to teach it to them; we can move on to other things”. This really explains how critical testing is for not only students but also for teachers. It gives goals for both to work on. Another topic to show interest in when discussing the necessity of a standardized test is the fact of all curriculum tests are not equal. Certain teachers give easier tests within their department than others. Different tests mean different scores, therefore a common test is something that needs to be kept around and not abolished. A common test sets a fair ground for every student and gives all children an equal opportunity at taking the test.
