Standardized testing does not measure students’ academic abilities In the beginning of standardized testing, students were set up to fail. They were skewed and not in some people’s favor. For example, on the tests there was questions that only white middle aged people would know, immigrants with little or no English would not compare to an average white middle aged person taking the test. They were also made to show standards for racial and ethnic minorities from colleges and the U.S. military. (Standardized Testing) This was the development of the 1917 Army Mental Test. This set the standards for immigrants to follow while entering the United States.
Standardized tests have been a part of the American culture since the early 1800’s. The Kansas Silent Reading Test was the first test multiple choice test, it was created to reduce “time and effort”. Even back then we tried to limit the effort to learn, why they did that when in fact education is the most important thing. Just to reduce “time and effort” of administrators. Kevin Ricke, Lakepark Audubon High School, says “ One of the benefits of standardized testing is to screen students to see if they need academic help. One of the drawbacks of standardized testing is when it’s used as a process of elimination for POS opportunities after high school.” He is saying that it helps in some ways, but the biggest drawback is, it is used to eliminate students out from taking certain college level courses, even if they have good grades and is a good student.
