The War on Drugs is a headline that everyone sees in the news at some point. It’s becoming a scary world out there especially with drugs being so easily available everywhere. Drug abuse or drug dealing, or distribution can happen to any person at any time, and it is because drugs are vastly available everywhere any one person could be the next person to use or deal drugs. It could be a high point or a low point in anyone’s life; it doesn’t matter about your social or economic class because it can affect anyone. Business Pundit said this ad was one of the Top 13 most disturbing drug ads. The advertisement I chose to write about is “Still Think Drugs Don’t Hurt Anyone But Yourself ?” The ad is sponsored by Utah for a Drug Free America in collaboration with the National Drug Counsels “Anti-Drug Campaign”. This ad displays all three forms of persuasion; ethos, pathos, and logos.
This advertisement is emotionally strong; and as the saying goes a picture is worth a thousand words. This ad is in black and white and shows a family is being broken up by drugs. The ad had a mother and her two children in it. In the center of the ad it says, “Still Think Drugs Don’t Hurt Anyone But Yourself?” The lettering is all bold white letters, except for the word hurt; hurt is in bold red letters and it draws attention to the word hurt and the surrounding picture. This as is very much pathos; in Greek Pathos means suffering and experience, and you really see that in this advertisement. It looks like the mother and the two children are suffering and upset and their lives are in an instant changed forever. You can see that by the very raw expressions on their faces and especially the girl in the front that is in the white shirt she is visibly upset.
