I am Aenal Patel, the future high school teacher of mathematics. I want to become a teacher because my high school teachers inspired me through their kind words, motivation, and caring. I started seeing them as a role model and want to become just like them now. At the age of 15, I immigrated to the U.S. and I did not understand a word in English. I came across some good teachers who constantly reminded me not to give up and taught me at the same time. Additionally, as I was still learning the new language, my interest in math increased since it required little to no English. This gave me another reason to become a teacher. High school students go through the phase or crisis of identity versus role confusion. Students in this phase explore in order to develop identity. If identity is not achieved, it results into role confusion (Snowman & McCown, 2012, p. 19). They experience puberty and sexual awareness which is when adolescence experiment their desires. They also become extremely capable of involving in formal thought, but need guidance and supervision of an adult to fully use this capability. Moreover, they also take importance of peers’ and others’ reactions when they do or say something. (p. 65-67). Therefore, it is important that the teacher and the classroom environment helps students with the development of identity. Skinner’s behavioral learning theories (Snowman & McCown, p. 149-158). I want to use the system of positive reinforcement along with the token economy in my classroom. For example, increasing the participation of students by rewarding them with a faux dollar which can be used as points during exams. As a consequence of negative behavior, I plan to practice negative and positive punishments such as solving ten extra problem in homework or by taking away phone or break time.
