At any given time, 1 in 20 Canadians are risking their lives by texting and driving (Bands), and 1 in 4 collisions are a result of it (McKnight). There are an estimated 1,600,000 collisions per year caused by texting and driving, and death rates grow by 4% each year (Bands). Taking steps towards self-control and investing in more innovative technology will tremendously help. In today’s day and age, with growing technology and demands to “stay connected”, more people are committing this deadly act. People need to be more aware of the dangers of cell phone use while driving so we can begin to cut it out.
While teens to seniors, and everything in between, are in vehicles driving, they’re urged to go on their phones, which can have deadly results. In fact, more teens text and drive that any other age. Up to 80% from the ages 16-20 admitted to it. This is because people are now obsessed with social media. Whether their phone sits in the cup holder, or the dashboard, they’re given easy access to it. The temptation for some to check their phone after it goes off can be unbearable, and many give in. We need to take steps to solve this problem so less lives are taken and the amount of collisions on our roads are reduced.
