Gun control is a very controversial topic in today’s society. Whenever a mass shooting occurs in America, gun control becomes a topic of interest where people don’t come to agreement. Some people believe that guns shouldn’t be banned because it’s their right to own guns and be able to protect themselves. While, on the other hand, people who are for gun control believe that guns are causing unnecessary deaths in America. Every year, “more than 30,000 people are killed by firearms each year in this country” (USA Gun Violence Statistics). In addition, most violent crimes are committed with guns: thus, restricting gun ownership will most likely reduce the number of crimes.

However, according to the National Crime Victimization Chart, 99.2% of these incidents show that a victim didn’t use a gun to protect themself. According to a study done by Arthur Keller, the invader is more likely to get the gun of the victim than the victim use the firearm for self-defense. Also, in that same study it was found that 95% of people keep their gun loaded. Having a gun loaded, poses a real threat to everyone in the house. A child by accident can find the gun and be curious and kill themselves. American children are sixteen times more likely to be killed in unintentional shootings than any other children in the world. So far in 2015, a forty-three toddlers have picked up a firearm and shot either themselves or another person. That’s about one shooting per week, according to the Washington Post. Incidents like mentioned before keep occurring and will continue to occur until there’s a gun control
