All of the Pennsylvania job advertisements require a Master’s of Library Science, which I will qualify for in about two years. Nevertheless, my undergrad was completed at Waynesburg University with a Bachelor’s degree in History and International Studies of Culture in May of 2014. While attending Waynesburg University, I was first introduced to the option of creating a library career. I began my career similar to most undergrad students by applying for the work-study program in the university’s library. Upon being hired I began to learn about the inner workings of a library. Fourteen hours a week I learned about shelving books using the Dewey Decimal System, preparing books for circulation, answering student questions relating to computer support, and assisting students in locating books throughout the library. After a semester of working in the library and proving to the staff my responsibility and detailed orientated mind, the electronic resource librarian offered me the opportunity to learn about interlibrary loan. I was offered to stay at the university during breaks and summer semesters to continually work for the library. During these times I became acquainted with the library when students were not roaming the rooms. I learned about the periodicals room and the time frame that each journal should be kept. The director of the library came to me personally in helping to assist him with weeding the library’s collection. While weeding the collection I learned about the importance in maintaining a library’s collection to be beneficial for the audience and the significance in having newer material.
