Executive director Singer used five complexity principles in the change effectively. Firstly, according to Porter-O’Grady and Malloch, “Wholes are not just the sum of their parts.” He analyzed the role of ED manager, ED assistant mangers, triage nurses, and hospital security and their work activities to help to decrease ED work place violence. He saw how the staffs work together to reduce workplace violence, and he convinced them of the importance of initiating the actions to unit’s safety. Singer did not only engage nurses, nursing aides, and hospital security, but also physicians and other leaders and mangers increase unit support. Secondly, every staff in the unit are very important to the change. “Value is now the centerpiece of Service Delivery” (Porter-O’Grady and Malloch, p. 62). Beside written policies and procedures related to the change were contributing to the staffs, staffs provided recommendations that could improve WPV implementation in the ED setting. For example, hospital securities suggest a plan that promotes a safe working environment. The security plan may include, but is not limited to: installation of panic buttons, direct telephone line to security, and initiation of specific types of badges to identify patients and visitors. Thirdly, “Diversity is essential to life” (Porter-O’Grady and Malloch, p. 67). Staffs offered different points of views to the change, and Singer listened to the staff’s ideas and answered all the questions related to his views or leadership.
