Arguments Against Standardized Testing

Hayley is just sick of taking tests. They give her so much stress that there should not be. Students are struggling everyday with all kinds of testing. They are overwhelming students. Even if people think tests are good for students, they really are not. Some think that standardized testing is beneficial, but others think that it is not. It is clear that overall, standardized testing should be eliminated from schools everywhere. Three reasons are tests are not helping students for college and careers, they cause too much stress and anxiety on students and teachers, and tests can be biased. Teachers get anxiety from being watched over by principals and evaluating them to make sure they know what they are doing (video from Thursday). Also, in New York, 60% of students skipped exams because of how high their stress and anxiety levels were (Skipping Out). If kids are skipping exams, finals, or tests, then they need to make it up, when they do that there will be a lot of pressure on them. The last reason is, standardized tests can be biased. A study by Jay Rosner, in 2002, showed that sample questions were answered more correctly by African-American students. Rosner also found that African-Americans were scoring lower that light-skins on their tests (Taylor). If things like that happen, then the tests really should not be taken by anyone. While some may argue, standardized tests help students in the long run, it is more true that they don’t help because teachers are not teaching kids much information. Some evidence to prove this reason is, some students think they won’t do well so they end up cheating and cheating doesn’t help you in a career (Strauss). If they cheat, usually they will get a bad score and then the students have to get taught that information again, and if that happens, other students get bored. It is like a chain
