1. JOHN
Management style
John’s style of management can be categorized as the pacesetting style where the manager tries to set an example by his or her actions. In this case John is participating in sales and is excellent at it thereby setting an example to the staff and setting high levels of standards. This style of management is ideal when motivation is required. If the team is lacking motivation, the manager steps in and plays the part to bring about enthusiasm in the team. This style is also good in an environment where the other workers are highly skilled and competent in their tasks and require little direction and coordination.

Even if the team members are competent in their tasks, communication is important to ensure a positive work environment. John’s current style of management also has a weak point when the workload is too high, it will be difficult for John to do all of the tasks he is doing now. There will eventually be less coordination between the team.
Suggestions to improve effectiveness
In order to improve John’s style of management, I propose the following actions;
1. Conduct weekly meeting with staff members. Use this as an opportunity to discuss targets, goals and milestones as well as issues, concerns and feedback.
2. It is good to set an example by working on the floor but it is better if John focuses more on how to maintain an effective work environment.
3. Delegation of tasks will help in reducing stress levels and will make both the manager and the workers more efficient.
4. Adopt other management styles such as affiliative, participative and coaching management styles.
