I thought I simply need to get through the class for SOPHIA credit and move on. I didn't really plan on learning anything useful. I was tired of having to memorize the functions of cells and similar topics that are not really applicable to my life outside the classroom.. However, I was wrong. Understanding the relationship between the environment and the human race is extremely critical for the continuation of the planet. Humans have not been treating the planet very well. We have been responsible for climate change, acid rain, or the deterioration of the ozone layer and we are feeling the impact of such carelessness. For example, because we released CFCs into the atmosphere we are faced with a hole in the ozone layer. The ozone is responsible for protecting the earth from harmful UV rays such as UV-B(the ozone prevents most UV-B) and UV-C. Thankfully, we took action and banned CFCs and the ozone is in repair. However, we are still faced with immediate threats like climate change. Climate change correlates with our excessive release of CO2 and has major impact on the world. Animals are losing their habitat, weather patterns are shifting, and even islands have the potential to disappear. If we do not take action, our society is going to change for the worst. I believe the first step for major change is education. I had heard of climate change, but I did not know how much it really impacted the world. After learning about the destruction it can cause I am now more willing to do something about it. While I personally cannot get factories to stop their extreme CO2 production, I can encourage others to support such causes and make a difference.
