Common Core Standards Affecting K-12 Education

Common Core Curriculum K-12 education is constantly changing. There are a lot of things that affect k-12 education like standardized testing and technology. However, another big thing that is affecting k-12 education is the implementation of Common Core. According to a website called the Common Core States Standards Initiative "The Common Core is a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy (ELA). These learning goals outline what a student should know and be able to do at the end of each grade. The standards were created to ensure that all students graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life, regardless of where they live. Forty-two states, the District of Columbia, four territories, and the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) have voluntarily adopted and are moving forward with the Common Core" (Common Core States Standards Initiative 1). Moreover, California has been one of forty-two states that adopted it. There are many advantages and disadvantages of it. One advantage is that it allows the students and teachers to be creative. For example, doing a hands on activity in math class. A second advantage is that it allows the teacher to be able to go deeper into a topic so that the students understand it more and apply it to everyday life. A third advantage is that "it requires students to take part in their learning and to think more critically about content, as opposed to simply regurgitating back what their teachers feed them," (qtd. in long 1) says Kathy Powers, who teaches fifth- and sixth-grade English Language Arts in Conway, Arkansas.
