What if you forgot to study for a test at school due to a rough night or just forgetting? Ok, now say you did study, but still did not receive the best scores. What if that one test determined your future and the progress you have made throughout the whole year? Do you think it's fair for students of all grade levels to have their academic performance based off of one exam? Standardized test are mandatory exams that are given to students starting in Kindergarten and are taken all the way until 12th grade. The purpose of the test is to measure a student's progress throughout the whole school year. The results will carry through grade levels and be a major deciding factor, when developing one's future. For example, funding in schools have greatly improved as a result of taking these test. “Proponents of testing argue that the government has a responsibility to ensure that educational funding is given to schools with the greatest need, and that the government must rely on some testing procedure to ensure that federal funding is being effectively used” (Issitt). This means that the government has good intentions in mind to increase outcome of educational programs. The mandated tests are still doing their part in identifying which students need extra help in school and how teachers can help. “Standardized testing is typically accompanied by a set of established standards or instructional framework which provide teachers with guidance for what and when something needs to be taught” (Meador). On the other hand, students affect their health by staying up late in order to prepare for these exams. Furthermore, the government should be funding programs that help a student develop over the course of a school year and should not be excessively funding mandatory tests that decrease success in students based on one
