Every year millions of people die because of drunk driving. According to Mothers Against Drunk driving, MADD, two out of three people will be involved in a drunk driving accident at least once in their lifetime. So if you took all of the United States’ population, 316.1 million, and multiply it by two thirds, you get about 210,733 people. Of those 210,733 almost 1.2 thousand of them are children that die in an accident (Alcoholalert.com, 181 children fatalities in DUI crashes). Drunk Driving fatalities go under involuntary manslaughter, but are not convicted of involuntary manslaughter if they don't kill anyone. But by getting in a car they are risking millions of lives. Because of this, drunk driver should be put in jail as if they committed involuntary manslaughter on their first reported offense. …show more content…

Along with the jail sentence you get a license suspension and an ignition interlock device (IID). An IID is essentially a breathalyzer in your car that will not allow you to drive without you breathing into the device and having no alcohol in your system. Every time you drove drunk you had a 42% chance of being in a drunk driving accident in the state of Washington in 2011 (Alcohol Alert). If you do the math you get 33 crashes out of 80. These ‘mistakes’ could have cost 33 families their husband, wife, daughter, mother, etc. and you would never be able to make that up.
