The Equality Act 2010 was created in order to ensure everyone has an equal opportunity to learn. In order to adhere to this act we must promote equality and value diversity. The main aims are to promote no bullying, no discrimination, and to support all learners to achieve their potential. Promoting equality begins at the start of a course. Initial assessments and icebreakers gives the trainer information on each learner, and identifies their learning needs and styles. Equality can be achieved by treating people fairly with equality of opportunity. As a trainer I need to assess learners needs and abilities, value their differences and promote inclusion, to ensure the learners feel valued and respected. For example, use men AND women in construction, use men AND women within beauty roles. Keeping information clear, simple and concise will make it more inclusive. Pictures can be used to aid understanding of text. And avoidance of jargon or over-complicated language in handouts and powerpoints. The aim is to include and involve all learners in the training. This can be achieved through pair work, group work, mixing up the groups, change the seating or layout of room, and by using techniques to randomly select learners. This helps learners get to know each other, promoting belongingness and solidarity within the group, and avoids discrimination (or that feeling of being ‘picked on’). Ground rules set by the group can help to maintain a level of respect and understanding. Equality and diversity issues are discussed as a group, and acceptable/unacceptable behaviours relating to this are discussed. This creates an atmosphere where learners support each other, and sensitive issues can be clearly voiced without
