Mission and Vision Statement The mission statement defines an action-based statement that declares the purpose of an organization and how they serve their customers. In some cases, it includes the description of the company. A mission statement gives a short summary of the company’s purpose. The vision statement gives the direction in which the company desires to achieve in the long run.

The vision statement represents the company's intended future while the mission statement clarifies the purpose of the organization. Ana Tankovic (2013) states that the “Mission and vision statement presents a starting point of creating the strategy” and this process begins with understanding the organization’s environment and resources (pp. 332-333). Even though these terms are intertwined, they have two distinct meanings. On the one hand, the company’s vision describes the future as it relates to its current condition. On the other hand, the company’s mission describes the organization’s distinctiveness, products and services, the industry, and the organization’s methodology.
These authors tell us that a mission statement should be a written account of the reason an organization exists, with its’ distinct purpose. It shows how an organization fits into a specific environment and distinguishes it from other organizations of its type. It identifies the scope of operations based on who the primary stakeholders are, what business they are in and what service they will provide. “The mission provides direction” (Ginter et al., p. 173) and must be the basis for decision-making about the future of the organization.

Properly crafted mission statements serve as filters to separate what is important from what is not, clearly state which markets will be served and how, and communicate a sense of intended direction to the entire organization” (Business Dictionary.com, 2016). Before anything else it is important to state the main difference between a vision and a mission. " A mission is different from a vision in that the former is the cause and the latter is the effect; while a mission is something to be accomplished whereas a vision is something to be pursued for that accomplishment” (Business
