English has always been one of my favorite subjects and I was interested in learning more about my English professor and why she decided to teach English at Baruch College, a primarily business school. Thus, for the Faculty Interview Assignment, I decided to interview my professor for English 2100, Professor Kathryn Swanton. Interestingly, Professor Swanton majored in Spanish, because she wanted to learn how to speak Spanish growing up in Southern California surrounded by and growing up with friends who always spoke Spanish. Additionally, She majored in Humanities, specifically concentrated in literature, because this was her favorite topic growing up and was highly interested in it. Additionally to teaching, she spends time hosting office hours, making lesson plans, grading essays, and re-reading stories in the class. Her favorite part about teaching at Baruch College is seeing students who are engaged in discussions and makes her feel proud about her work. However, she detests that sometimes a student clearly slacks off in class, or even commits plagiarism on essays, and thinks that the student is selling themselves short. Because of this, she advised me to take advantage of the opportunities that Baruch College can provide for students such as internships or study abroad programs to expand their horizons and network. Additionally, Professor Swanton advised anyone who is looking to teach in college that there are very limited full-time professor positions, and most professors work as Adjunct Professors; as an Adjunct Professor, Professor Swanton receives less pay if she were in a full-time position. Also, Professor Swanton believes that an individual should adapt to markets that are opening in order to land a job. For example, if there is a position available in other location, she believes a person should move in order to land that job. She also thinks that the manner of teaching is changing as well, with digital media being incorporated to teaching through the rise of online and hybrid
