Families and friends all around the world are united by food, but the food that is consumed in today’s world is not the same as back then. Food has changed into garbage that people do not even care what they eat anymore. In the 1970’s people had a traditional home life with both parents and always had home cooked meals. Life style from the 1970’s has changed from being at home cooking quality food to now go to the nearest fast food place and consuming it without enjoying it. Obesity was a word that people were not familiar with and was not ever used due to everyone being healthy. People blame other things and expect it to be easy, just avoiding sugars and unhealthy meals by staying away from fast food. 7 out 10 Americans do not know what preservatives are in the foods and cannot pronounce the unhealthy ingredients contained in it. In The New War on Obesity, Mike Mcquade reports the facts of consuming too much sugar when “Overall, it reduces consumption, and particularly for lower-income people, who have a higher incidence of untreated diseases, such hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic diseases related to excessive consumption of these foods”(1). Mcquade explains the possible diseases that will affect people who consume too much sugar. It’s sad to say that this generation will not have the opportunity to live as long as one’s parent or even a grandparent. Metabolic disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol are more common now than ever. So many delicious temptations, but Americans do not recognize the great price being paid. Americans need to bring awareness to this issue and turn it into a lifestyle change without failing to see the control that surrounds them. It will be twice the work to change the lifestyle and mentality, but it is the key to finding a bright future. It’s going to be a challenge and very hard to break, but not something impossible. People need to wake up and realize that it is possible with so many successful stories. These stories of people overcoming weight and health challenges should be motivation to others in the same situation. Social media is one of the main communication where obesity is not heard of as much as the others. It’s so hard for a video about obesity go turned around but yet so easy for a video of a irrelevant animal dancing around to go viral within seconds. Gym and fitness have become a trend.
