Unhealthy eating habits can be very hazardous to your health. Many people with normal bodies are conceived as “too skinny” because weight standards are getting higher and higher as more people become obese. The average American is also 23 pounds heavier than his or her ideal weight. The main reason why Americans are so obese is because people don't realize that they have a problem, serving sizes in America are huge, and because of our diet. With a little help from our government, and taking precaution to what you eat, we can prevent diseases linked to obesity, like diabetes and heart disease, in the future.
One reason why Americans are so obese is because obese adults and children are starting to perceive themselves as normal because they feel that most people around them look the way they do. It's quite clear that people are starting to change their view of what an acceptable size is. Even if being overweight is socially acceptable now, it doesn't change the fact that being overweight is hazardous to your health. Our portions may be large now but it wasn't always like that. For example, the average fast food meal was 4 times smaller in the 1950s. The average soda was about 97 calories (8 ounces) in the 1950s but now the average soda now is about 242 calories (20 ounce). Research shows that we eat less when our portions are smaller, even if we get seconds or thirds. We also consume the most calories a day compared to the rest of the world. On average we consume about 3,770 calories a day (2005-2007) but it is recommended for children to consume about 1,000-1,600 calories a day, women to consume about 1,400-2,200 calories and for men to consume about 1,400-2,800 calories a day.
