My interest in Economics first arose in twelfth grade when I took a class on economics. My introduction to concepts like Adam Smith’s invisible hand, an analogy that demonstrates how people’s selfish desires benefit their economies, challenged me to question how, and why, my economy function and wonder what else influenced my economy. I developed a desire to learn more about the world around me, I began to research the basics of economics, supply and demand, shifts in supply and demand, and changes in prices, that made me further question the world around me. I confidently said yes, not even having the slightest Idea of the requirements, and that’s when I learned I had a 2.1 G.P.A. and four D’s. My whole time in high school, I never sought out challenges, like extracurriculars, and I settled for any grade besides a fail, but I’d never realized that in doing so I failed myself. I feared becoming another statistically low-income Latino like my siblings. At the time, I didn’t want to go to community college because I’d known too many people, like my sister and friends, who dropped out their first semester and I was afraid of following their footsteps. I left that day and I reevaluated myself as a person and what I wanted to do with my life. I realized I wanted to help support my parents, live a comfortable life, unlike the cramped apartment single I was used to, and I wanted to inspire those around me, like my cousins, to have the best future possible.
