My motivation to study medicine comes from my desire to understand how the body works, and to help other people with that knowledge. It fascinates me how a medical professional is able to heal or alleviate the pain of a patient. I would love to be that person, not just to be able to help the patient but those around them as well.
My A-Level subjects have given me the opportunity to acquire many relevant skills, which will benefit me in a career in medicine. Biology and Chemistry have improved my analytical and practical skills. In Biology I have particularly enjoyed the study of hereditary illnesses and how the immunological system works to combat infectious diseases. Whilst in Chemistry we learn how to synthesise medicine like aspirin. While Physics and Maths have helped me improve my problem-solving and logical skills, Spanish has given me a different cultural insight which will help me …show more content…

I have undertaken a number of work experience placements: I undertook a week's placement at my local hospital, where I learned a great deal by shadowing different specialists and seeing how they work when an unusual situation arose, for example a patient who was recovering from the removal of ovarian cysts. The doctors were concerned with the amount of bleeding post-operation. After a few days in observation she was transferred to the urology ward as she improved. I learned how a multidisciplinary team works, how they communicate with each other and what each health professional in the team offers.
