I have many talents, skills and attributes, which have been very beneficial both for professional and personal development. I am a very confident, outgoing opinionated person, therefore sometimes I might come across as controlling and domineering. I believe that this originates from having trust issues and a fear of change. I need to try and trust individuals and that they can perform and deliver high quality results. As I undertook a Belbin’s Team Type’s questionnaire ,(p534-434), it only confirmed that I like to have follow things through, have high sense of standards, but tend to worry about technicalities and the end results. In Merlin, I got an opportunity to observe 4th years, while they were treating patients. This way, I learned how important it is to be able to put our academic theory into practice, as without being able to conjugate these two areas, we would not achieve the required results. I also developed my knowledge about the basic equipment used and how it is applied on the patient. I was introduced to foot pathologies that I had studied, but had yet not seen in practice. My personal skills were developed as well, as I gained self-confidence, became more analytical, understanding and creative. The use of interpersonal skills is another fundamental part to consider when working as a podiatrist. One of them is assertiveness (Index C). I still find it difficult to be assertive in some situations. I can sometimes become aggressive or manipulative, with certain people. I try and set a timetable for myself of the task that need to be accomplished by the end of the week. Generally I achieve them without any major obstacles. I was very good at completing the assigned tasks, but I always needed more time than any other individual, therefore I have learnt now to start my assignments and projects as soon as possible, so I don’t feel stressed or under pressure once it comes close to the deadline.
