In the upcoming academic year, I have applied to, and plan on attending, the University of Bonn, in Bonn, Germany. Studying abroad interested me when I started looking at colleges to attend when I was still attending high school. I understood that the University of Kansas has an excellent study abroad office and offer many stellar programs. In Germany alone, there are multiple programs to study the German language and other disciplines abroad, however, I chose Bonn, because I believe that this program offers long term benefits to myself and my education. I began studying German my freshman year of high school. The class size was small allowing me to learn Germanic studies from a very personal manner. The school only employed a singular German teacher and her dedication to teaching us to the utmost excellence followed us for three years, until the district cancelled the German program. Recently, I declared German as a second major, along with psychology. Now, moving forward, to continue my German studies I want to study abroad. I have chosen Bonn over all other programs offered by the Office of Study Abroad because I believe Bonn offers the most, not only for my German speaking abilities, but for my other studies as well. The next step for my education with learning the German language is immersion. Understanding how I learn, I believe that full immersion is an important step for my fluency. Bonn, in particular, also offers a month-long course at the start of the school year to teach German and help acclimate students to the new environment.
