Prejudice against the gay community did not end with the legalization of lesbian and gay marriage in 2015; infact, to this day gay people are still denied certain rights because of their sexuality. Gay people are interested in adopting children from foster homes, but some do not believe this should be permitted. Gay people have faced much backlash for their decision to adopt, in turn affecting the actual likelihood of these individuals carrying through with their decision. Opponents believe gay people could not provide the kind of care and stability necessary to raise a child (Dailey 2). Likewise, some oppose it because it is against their personal religion (Pro and Con 7). Gay people are very often discriminated against and abused due to their sexual orientation. They have gone through similar hardships and indignities as children in foster care. The abuse these children encounter may stem from a previous life in a broken home, or, in some cases, neglect by the foster care system (McGowan 9). A quote from a New York Times Article on the conditions of local foster homes states, “...the city said for the first time that many of the children had been shuttled from place to place because they were too disturbed for placement in private homes and current group settings” (Lueck 7). Some of the children in these facilities have experienced terrible wrong-doings to the point of disturbance. In addition, overcrowding, a common practice in foster homes, results in a lack of care for children at risk, such as those who are blind, mentally unstable, or special needs (Lueck 10).
