She spent four years being forced to have sex 30 times a day and had a baby at the age of 15, which was used to make Karla do stuff against her will to keep the baby safe. Human smuggling and trafficking has become a major issue in the world today, 14,000 to 17,000 people are trafficked in the U.S each year. Unfortunately Karla Jancinto was 12 when she was targeted by a trafficker and lured her away. Women and children are the largest group of victims and they are often emotionally and physically abused. The FBI and UN estimate that hundreds of thousands of girl’s around the world are in bondage to sex traffickers and the numbers are increasing. The age of the victims are usually 8 to 18 and some are as young as 4 or 5. Poor countries, Cambodia for example, families sell their young daughter to sex traffickers for the $10. Thankfully they are rescued later on and sent to shelters. In 2000 the congress passed the Trafficking Victims Protection act which addresses indentured as well. The law authorizes the State department to create public awareness programs to help put an end to trafficking in foreign counties and developed sanctions against countries’ that fail to take action. In 2003 The Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act added a new initiative to the original law to collect foreign data on trafficking investigations, prosecutions, convictions and sentences. In 2006 data shows that reporting jurisdictions prosecuted 5,808 people for trafficking related offenses and secured 3,160 convictions. The reauthorization of TVPA would improve the original legislation and the authorizing the TIP office to negotiate child protection compacts with designated focus countries to increase resources to eradicate child
