Marijuana is a controversial drug that became illegal in the early 1900s in the United States. Quite recently – over the past decade or so – marijuana has become quite less taboo in the United States, and it is legal in some form in almost half of the country’s states. Marijuana is legal in 23 states in at least some form, and is fully legalized for recreational use as well as its other uses in Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and the District of Columbia. More states are following this path and considering legalizing marijuana for its medical uses or for its recreational uses as well. It’s nonsensical for alcohol to be legal while marijuana is not. It has been proven alcohol is much more dangerous than marijuana, yet 21 year olds have the chance of going to jail simply for smoking, or even just possessing marijuana, but 21 year olds who drink alcohol would not get in trouble. While it is unsafe to drive with either, that is about the only adverse effect marijuana has that could get someone in trouble if it were to be legalized. According to the authors of ‘Marijuana Is Safer: So Why Are We Driving People to Drink?’, alcohol is proven to fuel violent behavior such as domestic abuse, sexual assault, and homicide, while marijuana does not. There is evidence to believe that marijuana may actually have calming effects for people. Not to say alcohol should be illegal, because that wouldn’t do any good, but marijuana is definitely a lesser of the two and should not stay illegal while alcohol is legal.
