Hello, I am Jordan Brown, and I am a sophomore at North Eugene High School. I am writing to you because I want to help make a difference in our state, and in our community, regarding Syrian refugees. For the past month and a half we have been studying Immigration policies, the Vetting process and other things relating to Syrian refugees, and now I am writing to you to voice my opinion, and try to make a difference. My proposal to help the Syrian refugee crisis is to start off by letting in sixty thousand refugees per year, then letting in an additional ten thousand more refugees every year after.
I believe that we definitely let more Syrian refugees into the United states. I do understand that some people believe there are risks to letting Syrian refugees into the United States, but all of their risks and critiques are based on false claims and they are judging Syria and the entire Middle East in a very Ethnocentric way. Some people may claim that Syrians are terrorists and they will destroy the American way of life, but this is simply not true. America was founded on Immigrants, and if we let more people into the United States they will not weaken our economy and society, Syrian refugees will simply strengthen it. I believe this is a step in the Complete wrong direction; instead of helping the people who need it the most, we are completely ignoring them and trying to forget about them all. Another reason there has been a pause on Syrian refugees entering the United States, is so we can check our Vetting system. I do believe this is a good thing to check and make sure it is an effective system. I also believe this is simply a way of stalling until a better bill to stop immigrants is put in place.
