The statistics show that in 2011, 1.3 million car crashes were involved in the use of cell phones. Texting and driving, which overpowers drinking and driving, is now the leading cause for death among teens. Teenagers are very inexperienced with driving, and added to texting, multitasking can make driving a very dangerous situation. Over fifty percent of all teens have admitted to texting and driving at the same time. A teen is always used to having a cell phone in their hands, and a buzzing phone at a stop light can be very tempting.

According to the article, Cell Phones and Texting Endanger Teen Drivers, Pennsylvania is not the only state that agrees with this problem, “Talking on a cell phone or texting causes drivers to lose their focus, often with deadly consequences. Driving is not a time to multitask, especially if the driver is a teenager. Nearly 28 percent of all vehicle crashes can be tied to talking on a cell phone or texting, according to the National Safety Council” (Jackson). Texting and driving doesn’t only happen in Pennsylvania, but is an issue nationally. With new technology coming out and new versions of cell phones, distracted driving can become more of a problem. Some believe that the reason for banning cell phone use is being misguided such as Andrew Ferguson, a senior editor from the Weekly Standard. According to his article texting a driving is just as bad as talking to another person in the vehicle or taking your eyes off the road for any reason. He disagrees with the ban, "…tell us that it's not about where your hands are, but where your head is."
