In 2012, a 24 year old art student by the name of Jacqueline Traide was subjected to animal testing methods in a Lush store window. Passerbies were horrified and baffled by the treatment of this young woman, as was the rest of the world, after this story was spread. She participated in this appalling display to portray the reality of animal testing tortures when they are inflicted on our own kind, rather than other species, embodying and proclaiming the question: if this treatment is not acceptable for humans, why is it acceptable for animals?

It is often utilized in a trial-and-error, haphazard manner. 92% of drugs/products that are tested on animals have completely different effects when used by humans. This demonstrates lack of care and effectiveness with animal testing methods, as if they show no restraint due to the absence of limitation on animal resources. Additionally, animal testing is extremely costly, and more expensive than some other alternatives. Every year, 40% of the U.S National Institute of Health’s budget is spent on animal testing - that's up to 14.5 billion dollars. Many alternative resources are much cheaper, as they do not require constant funding that animal testing requires for housing animals and such. It is often ineffective, there are better and cheaper alternatives and animal testing is simply utterly unethical. Rather than taking the stance that animal testing should be banned, we as humans should be advocating the disuse of this research method to better our values and improve our world. The root of most of the causes and issues in our society is selfishness and indifference. When this type of horrendous issue is exposed to humans, we take action, we protest, we feel compassion. However, we turn a blind eye to the issues behind closed doors, because it benefits us at someone else’s cost. We are taking advantage of our dominance as the most intelligent species in our world, but what we are doing is exceedingly vacuous and ignorant. It is important that we reflect on our actions and ask ourselves this question: is cheap makeup and dish soap really worth this
