Introduction

The purpose of this qualitative case study is to compare/contrast the art education practice in four arts and cultural organizations in New York City. This research explores the following questions:
• What’s the most successful family program in your organization and why?
• What is the purpose of parent involvement how do you ensure their participation?
• What are the intentions, actions, and abilities for creating family programs?
• How is success measured?
• What are some internal and external challenges?
• How do parents and children react to dual participation?

At the same time the program gives youngsters the opportunity to play with art and learn how to talk about art, and to create open-ended questions about art with their parents.
Open Studios program inspires families with older children to discover museum galleries and make art as a reaction to their experience. In this program, “turn talks” is highly encouraged where all participants, parents and children, are asked open-ended questions to help them interpret art. The conversation might start with educators saying, “Let’s talk about what the adults think,” or “Let’s talk about what the children think”; this results in participants’ hands being raised to speak each time.
During Art for Families program parents, who are now participants, experience positive family interactions. Families learn new ways and share ideas with children, and strengthen their own skills and comfort with art making. This achieved by art making and materials process exploration and learning about Noguchi’s life and art. Children also experience positive family experience by sharing ideas with their parents.
