I have decided that it is a smart decision for me to conduct an interview with the school director since I am amazed how they schedule to meet the needs of all 600 students enrolled. Chicago Math and Science Academy is a small, structured school, with 600 students attending grades 6 through 12, delivering a rigorous and innovative educational program. CMSA came in the #2 spot among the top 5 charter high schools who achieve this recognition in 2016. Since it is a small school, Director Mr. Ali Kuran had led determining class assignments and developing the master schedule for all students including students with learning disabilities. The same number of hours for 5th grade language arts and social studies can be assigned to another teacher, who can teach both subjects, too. These two teachers and specialists (art, PE, music, Spanish and computer teachers) make up a team and get together for a meeting on every Monday after school for designing complementary and collaborative curricula. They do this because new 6th graders are coming from a self-contained classroom and They want a smooth transition from a self-contained classroom to a team teaching one step by step. At the 6th grade, students have five different teachers, at the 7th grade students have six different teachers, and the 8th grade students have seven different teachers. They have three special education teachers, each taking a class load of 10 to 15 students and three paraprofessionals to cover all inclusion supports and they hire additional paraprofessionals as needed. They do not pay attention to having common planning periods for the same grade core course teachers when they make a master schedule because they have a grade level meeting every week. CMSA Teachers do all of their school-related work such as planning, preparation, grading exams and entering grades into school database, in their planning periods. The weekly meetings for 6th, 7th and 8th grade teachers are scheduled on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays respectively. In addition, the general staff meeting is scheduled on the first Wednesday of every month. Second, third, and fourth Wednesday of each month left for special education and Intervention Assistance Team meetings. This instructional assignment works well for CMSA.
