The policy I chose from Clark County School District (CCSD) that relates to families is Policy 1140, Family Engagement. This policy outlines the importance and expectations of family engagement in schools within CCSD. The first section of this policy describes that a child’s first learning environment is the home, and the importance of family involvement on student’s academic success. It also gives the district’s definition of parent as “any caregiver who assumes responsibility for nurturing and caring for children.” (CCSD, 2015) This definition of parent encompasses the wide variety of families that are represented in within CCSD. Parent and school collaboration are encouraged to build strong learning supports and healthy development, both at school and at home. Next Policy 1140 asserts that parents and families should advocate on behalf of their student to ensure that students are “treated fairly and have access to learning opportunities that support student achievement.” (CCSD, 2015) Another section of Policy 1140 details the partnership between the district, schools, and parents in the important decision-making process. Furthermore, this section states that schools should actively recruit parents to take part in the decision-making processes, and frequently evaluate the parent’s role in the process. Next this policy denotes that the district and schools should collaborate with the community, while being culturally aware of traditions and practice to support student learning.
