Teaching
Many children sit in a classroom and are asked what do they want to be when they grow up. Many can answer without hesitation. I was one of them. I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I did not really know what type of teacher until many years later. Many students who are asked that are able to follow those dreams then some have life happen and takes them in a totally different direction then one you ever saw yourself going. Well something like that happened to me. I had one dream of becoming a teacher but family reasons pushed me in another direction for many years. After many years it’s time for me to follow my dreams and do what I have passion and a calling for. That is teaching special needs students.

The first assignment I held as a volunteer was working with special needs children in the day program that was ran at the children’s hospital. The day camp allowed for children with down syndrome, multiple sclerosis, children who were deaf children and many other special needs children a place to go while parents were at work. Many day cares do not have spaces for children with special needs. So this type of day program was a great benefit to the community. I was nervous at first for the unknown. Bad to say this about myself but I was afraid to hurt them or not really know how to act around children with special needs. I had never in my life been around someone with any type of special need. Well that nervousness was gone with in the first few minutes of my first day. The smiles were cautious and the laughter like no other. These children faced so much adversity in their life’s on a daily basis but were full of life at the same time. Nothing ever seemed to get them down. These kids were special indeed they taught me so much about myself. I possibly never would have realized my true passion and calling in life if it hadn’t been for these precious children. They made me realize I had a passion for helping people grow, learning new things, and a calling to work with children who might not be like the rest.
