As an educator, I hope to create an environment to help my students reach their full potential through the sharing of ideas and strategies in a respectful classroom. Each student is unique and requires an environment that encourages him or her to learn and succeed. During my years as a mathematics student and tutor, I have found that competition, while encouraging to some extent, is the ultimate downfall of many students’ learning. Students focus on being the first one done and completely overlook the work that they are doing in their race to the finish line. I would like to provide a stress-free environment for my students. I would like to provide a caring atmosphere for students to mature emotionally and intellectually. Each student learns in his or her own way, so it is crucial that an instructor be open to allowing students to explore while having the patience to accommodate for a room of unique learners. The teacher and the students are guides and explorers. The teacher provides access to information and researches new ways to introduce concepts. Mathematics is a process. Each concept in this subject builds upon the previous concepts learned just like jobs in a factory; steps must first be taken and completed before the product can move on to the next step. As years go by, students increase their knowledge of mathematical ideas and operations, eventually using them in their later math courses. It is essential that a student knows how to add before he or she multiplies. As an educator, I hope to ensure that each of my students has a complete comprehension of their previous learning before introducing new material.
