In the United States, a single violent crime takes place every 26.3 seconds (FBI National Data). Many people have their own ways of thinking to help stop these crimes from happening. These ideas vary from harsher penalties for crimes to banning our weapons. Gun control laws will not help prevent crimes from taking place. The criminals will still obtain the weapons, it will only lead to more victims, and people will still find other ways to kill each other.
Whether the weapons are legal or illegal, criminals will still get their hands on the guns. Most criminals get their weapons illegally, to begin with. Taking away guns will take away many people’s line of self-defense. In the article Moyer writes, “Kleck and Gertz extrapolated their results, they concluded that Americans use guns for self-defense as many as 2.5 million times a year” (Moyer, para. 32). A gun is the only weapon that makes sense to use against another gun. While some people may use their guns for the wrong reasons, most people use the dangerous weapon to protect themselves and their family. Even if we can ban every firearm in the United States, criminals will undoubtedly find another weapon to use against the victims. A case could be made that other weapons, such as knives and pepper spray, may be used for self-defense. These forms of weapons could be efficient if another person was coming after you with their own hands or a knife, but if a person with a gun was about to shoot you then how would a knife save you?
