themes and messages throughout the storyline that the author is trying to show to the various audiences that it boasts. One of the main themes of this novel is the theme of identity and finding out who you really are. A second theme is fear,throughout the meticulously crafted novel multiple characters have to face many fears that they need to overcome to move on with their life. Both of these themes help develop the storyline in the novel and they help to frame the work as a whole.

When she come to the decision to choose Dauntless she believes it is because it will allow her to discover her true self & her true identity. But even after trying to find herself the faction does not truly fit, and Tris spends the entire novel struggling to come to terms with the fact that because of her Divergence, none of the factions will ever truly define her the way they do for others kids that have chosen factions. She develops her identity through her relationships with her friends and family and the difficult choices she is forced to make repeatedly when brought forth the challenges of both initiation and the inevitable war in her society. “I feel like someone breathed new air into my lungs. I am not Abnegation. I am not Dauntless. I am Divergent.” Divergent places huge importance on coming face to face with your identity and you're true no strings attached self, and in the end, Tris has to accept that she will never fit perfectly anywhere; she instead has to form her own path through her own choices. Throughout the novel characters have to face fears in order to be able to arise . An example of this would be in the very beginning of the story when Tris has to pass her Dauntless initiation and jump off a train onto a rooftop. That is a fear she had to conquer to be able to move on with her life. Another example of this theme is seen when Tris zip lines off the Hancock building. This is something scary for her, but she does it anyways because she feels the need to get over the fear of doing it to be accepted by her faction. Courage was huge for the Dauntless, courage may also imply what the Dauntless are known for , but in reality, they're more focused on fear. Throughout Divergent, we see the characters questioning the nature of bravery and fear. And thanks to the Dauntless initiation method, which includes lots of "facing your fears" we get to view a lot of what Tris is afraid of.“Fear doesn't shut you down; it wakes you up.” This theme is important because it applies directly to real life and is relevant to everyone in some way or another. A human being can't go through their life with fears that stop them for achieving everyday activities, and in Divergent, Roth gives the message that everyone must get over their intimidating factors and fears at one point or another.
